Whether you’re a woodworker, a flooring professional, or simply an admirer of natural beauty, this article covers madrone’s character, its appearance, and why moisture management matters so much with this wood.
In the United States, it’s called the Pacific madrone or madrona. In Canada, it’s known as the arbutus. A related European species is called the strawberry tree. The name madrone comes from the Spanish word for strawberry tree, madroño.
Whatever you call it, here at Wagner Meters in southern Oregon, it’s a neighbor of ours, and one we value for its unique qualities.
Arbutus Menziesii
Pacific madrone (أربوتوس مينزيسي) grows along the Pacific coast from California to southern British Columbia, often in clearings or on rocky bluffs. It loves sun and doesn’t tolerate shade well.
It’s usually found in open areas with fast-draining soils. The tree is easy to recognize by its winding, irregular shape (sometimes with multiple trunks) and its spectacular bark.
This broadleaf evergreen often grows alongside redwoods, Douglas-fir, and other coastal conifers, competing with them for space and light. Instead of growing straight up, madrone twists and turns its trunk and limbs toward the sun. Its clusters of small flowers attract bees, and its red berries draw birds such as waxwings and robins.

The tree’s bark is one of its most striking features. The rich orange-red outer bark peels away in large, thin sheets to reveal smooth, satiny bark that’s greenish or silvery underneath. Young stems can range from green to chartreuse.
Flooring professionals consider madrone a specialty hardwood.
Madrone makes a beautiful floor because of its color and its eye-catching burl. The wood is generally a cream or pinkish brown and can include darker reddish areas, and madrone burl, with its tightly clustered swirls, is especially prized.
Both select and character grades of madrone flooring show a wide variety of colors, sometimes with a whole spectrum of grain and color in the same board.
Madrone is also a hard, dense wood (about 1,460 lbf on the Janka scale) with a fine, even texture that polishes to a smooth finish.
All in all, Pacific madrone offers several appearance and performance options for unique hardwood flooring.

Madrone is prone to warping and checking as it dries. It shrinks a lot: its tangential shrinkage from green to oven-dry is about 12.4%, compared with 8.6% for northern red oak. And the crooked shapes that define the species can make it hard to get long boards for flooring.
As a result, the limited supply of prime madrone flooring can be very expensive.
Hobbyists, however, can find many smaller pieces to use for picture frames, bowls and other turnings, furniture, and cabinetry. Madrone is also made into paneling and veneer.
Because it’s so prone to warping and checking, madrone needs a carefully controlled drying process, and it’s critically important to monitor its moisture content (MC).

Although its tendency to move limits some uses, madrone performs well once it’s properly dried. It takes stains and finishes well. Madrone has a fine texture, is dense, and has an average specific gravity (SG) of about 0.58.
Moisture meters like Wagner Meters’ أوريون® خط make good business sense for professionals and hobbyists who turn Pacific madrone into flooring, furniture, cabinetry, and other wood products.
With the meter set to the right SG for madrone, accurate MC readings tell you how the finished product is likely to perform. Properly dried to the correct MC, Pacific madrone offers flooring professionals and hobbyists a beautiful, distinctive option.
