Transitions between seasons, such as the shift from spring to summer, are especially tricky, because temperature and humidity can change quickly and unexpectedly. Lumber can come out of the kiln with moisture content (MC) readings that miss the target, so kiln operators need to be ready to adjust schedules quickly.
This guide covers how seasonal changes affect wood drying, the common moisture-related problems mills face, and proven ways to protect lumber during storage and drying.
When outside temperatures are below freezing, very little moisture moves out of the wood. As temperatures rise, moisture starts moving toward the surface as the wood dries toward equilibrium with the air.
If lumber then dries too quickly, it can develop checks, splits, and other drying defects.
ريح
In regions with low humidity and higher wind speeds, mill personnel should watch for damage to الأخشاب المكدسة stored before تجفيف الفرن. The boards can lose moisture too quickly, and when the ends and surfaces dry much faster than the inside of the board, the stress can cause end splits and surface checks.
In places with humid summers, fungal growth and staining are common concerns, especially if the wood is stored where there’s little airflow.
In these conditions, keep storage time before kiln drying short, so mold and stain have less time to develop. Kiln drying also typically kills insects and their eggs.
Managing the moisture content of commercial lumber is demanding enough even before seasonal transitions add unpredictability. Every precaution taken in the yard helps kiln operators produce the highest-grade lumber possible.
Many mills apply a wax-based end coating, such as Anchorseal®, to the ends of logs or boards. It is often sprayed on the ends of wood after it is sawn into dimensional stock.
In addition to end coating, mills may opt for a controlled air-drying process before kiln drying timber. This slowly brings the lumber’s MC down from green toward the fiber saturation point, which helps prevent defects that can develop when wood dries too fast.
In some parts of the country, mills sprinkle log decks with water to keep logs from drying out and developing defects before they’re sawn and kiln dried. Keeping logs wet also helps curb insects and fungi, which need air as well as moisture to get established.
Some eastern lumber mills keep birch, maple, and pine logs frozen until they’re sawn into specialty products, to help preserve a white color.
Processing lumber before it reaches the kiln is challenging enough without the unpredictable weather of seasonal transitions.
Many lumber mills use handheld moisture meters for spot checks and also have in-line moisture measurement systems on their conveyors that measure the full length of every piece as it’s processed.
Many mills also use in-kiln moisture measurement systems to monitor the moisture content of a few packs of lumber in every kiln charge, helping them better determine when charges of lumber are ready to come out of the kiln.
